Google’s whole system for generating search results for specific phrases is based on an algorithm which they originally designed at a very basic level while the 2 founders were at Stanford University in the 90′s. When a browser now tries to search for a specific word or phrase in the Google search engines, Google goes through their electronic filing cabinet and ranks the web pages in order of relevance and importance, a judgement they have made based on their index card information.
